View Full Version : What is the container made of?
Q: A scientist, who must store a 1 mol/L solution of Co(NO3)2(aq) at room temperature, needs a container that will not cause a chemical reaction with the solution it will hold.
From which of the following substances should the container be made?
A) Chromium
B) Magnesium
C) Nickel
D) Zinc
How do you know what the answer is?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
I'm not sure.Considering the positions of the above elements in the electrochemical series I think it should be made out of Ni.The elements Mg,Zn and Cr appear (in that order) before Co,so these 3 should be able to displace Cr(I think) and Ni appears just after Co so (once again I think )it's safe to use a Ni container.
I'd love to know if I'm right though?
Hana's explanation sounds logical and correct. I don't have access to an electrochemical series, but assuming it's what he says then i agree.

Thanks for confirming.
BTW I'm not a 'he'.:o
I'm male, so I use that pronoun when I don't know otherwise lol.
And I just realised I could have googled for a series.
