View Full Version : Chemistry is not an easy subject

I first studied chemistry in 1998, from the most simple concept like what is inside atom and periodic tables etc, to the very complex organic and inorganic chemistry, i had been studying it quite hard until I didn't continue it in 2004

For long I think chemistry is the most messy subject because there are a lots of things to memorize while there are also too many things you need to understand, and very often the idea of chemistry in molecular level is always quite abstract...there are always topics that I don't quite understand the concept even after many times of revision...

I understand that one of the reason is that the syllabus and the teacher who teaches chemistry in my countries are not good and sophisticated enough.

Now, for some personal reasons I need to rebuild my chemistry concepts, to some advanced level (but below the undergraduate levels), I would like to know if there are any good notes on web which can help me to do this. Or if there are any good websites which can suit my need?

THanks all!!!

Moved the thread.

Any specific areas? Chemistry is a very broad field, are you interested in organic/inorganic/physical/biological etc? Also, what's your current level of knowledge?

I'd recommend learning about equilibirum, K-values, enthalpy as the basis for going further, since understanding that will serve you well. Knowing various reaction mechanisms and functional groups is also extremely important (aldehydes, ketones, esterification etc.).

If you tell us what you're looking to learn, we can provide links and more information :)

Again, it depends what you want to specialise in, if you want a good general book but below undergrad level then I would go with an A Level textbook (or whatever the equivalent is in your country) because they are aimed at students and should contain examples with possible worked answers in the back to test yourself

I want to stick around more about physical chemistry, I have studied it many years ago but almost forget 90% of the things, by the way, I was quite weak at physical chemistry, I feel their concepts very abstract and confusing to me. However, organic chemistry is very much simplier because it mainly requires you to memorise equations and observations... more advanced one of organic chemistry is not necessary to me at the moment.

I hope people here could suggest me a good website where I can trust and concentrate my studies there. tHanks all!!!

But as I always said, I thank humanity for creating the Internet, yes, but I still think books are more helpful that anything on here. Visit your local library for chemistry books, I am pretty sure you can find books that suits your situation. Plus, reading a book is always better than reading a website. :p

Urg, I hate physical chemistry.
The textbook that a friend is using is called

P Atkins and J De Paula, Atkins’ Physical Chemistry, 8th edition, Oxford University Press, 2006.

If that helps.

kenny 1999 please dont say that chemistry is not an easy subject because if you decide to call it a hard subject you will never find it to be easy. That is my advice for you:).

I have a little problem on chemistry but am still trying my best to see that i am one of the best students in chemistry.my dad studied BIOCHEMIISTRY in USA ,and he teach me chemistry, and i am improving but i dont know how to balance an equation please i need help

If he did, he should be able to help you balance an equation (it will be easier to learn from him than from us).

If not, post a new thread for somebody to try and help you with. If you're still trying, I advise balancing lone species last, since you can always make them fit.

i like chemistry when i am asked to do problems but when i have a test in theory i really hate it :(
